We are launching a new GDM 2CD Album series of 100 Ennio Morricone Original Soundtracks (50 x 2CD Albums). 100 important OSTs of Maestro Morricone spanning from the sixties to date, recorded on 2 discs, one
disc for each of the 2 original soundtracks of this series. The 100 titles will be released two by two once a month. We choose a 2 CD box, so that will lower the retail price, compared to a single CD album, and save some money on shipping as well. The packaging is very nice, with an elegant O-Card Sleeve and, later on, we will announce an art design decorated box to store together all the 50 albums of this GDM 100 Ennio Morricone Original Soundtracks series, which is so unique for soundtrack lovers and collectors.
Graphic art design by GDM and IMR. Liner notes by Sijbold Tonkens.

LE FOTO PROIBITE DI UNA SIGNORA PER BENE (Forbidden photos of a lady above suspicion) 1970

The film LE FOTO PROIBITE DI UNA SIGNORA PER BENE (1970) is a Giallo-Movie directed by Luciano Ercoli. In Italy a Giallo-Movie means a thriller movie. The name came from the mystery and crime pulp novels with yellow covers in post fascist Italy. Today Giallo movies are worldwide cult movies.
Ennio Morricone started to write music for Giallo movies in 1970. The music for LE FOTO PROIBITE DI UNA SIGNORA PER BENE is not an easy listening experience. The music is sometimes complex. Difficult to follow yet always interesting. The use of electronics in combination with orchestral instruments is done in a smart way. The electronic music is used as a single instrument of its own. Not as a replacement for strings or any other instrument. Note this score was never intended to become a soundtrack on CD or LP. It was composed to underscore the film and help it up to a higher level. It worked great in the film. About ten more Giallo movies were made with Morricone's music. Of which L'UCCELLO DALLE PIUME DI CRISTALLO (The Bird with the Crystal Plumage) (also 1970) by Dario Argento is probably best known. However, fortunately, the fame of the composer made that almost everything he did has become available on CD.
The theme AMORE COME DOLORE is melodious and beautifully orchestrated. It is one of the few lovely themes on the CD. The theme comes back in QUELLE FOTO in another arrangement. It is in fact a three notes theme for piano. In the track DORICAMENTE we hear I CANTORI MODERNI DI ALESSANDRONI, a vocal group that worked with Ennio Morricone since 1964 until 1974. They did hundreds of films together. On the soundtrack is also the beautiful and recognisable voice of Edda Dell'Orso. Morricone used her voice not for songs but always as an instrument. Another cooperation for many years with Morricone. They worked recently together on the latest Giuseppe Tornatore film LA MIGLIORE OFFERTA (2012)
This CD is a remastered edition of the most complete edition, now with an improved sound quality. Enjoy!

IL RITORNO DI RINGO (The Return of Ringo) 1965

IL RITORNO DI RINGO is the sequel of UNA PISTOLA PER RINGO, both directed by Duccio Tessari. They were released in 1965 with basically the same cast, starring Giuliano Gemma in the role of Ringo. (nicknamed ANGEL FACE)
For Morricone this was his fifth Western, or Spaghetti Western, if you like. The previous year he made name with Per un pugno di dollari (For a Fistful of Dollars), directed by Sergio Leone.
The score for the Western is in the typical style of Morricone which made him famous and which has become standard for Westerns ever since. His style for Western movies has been copied by many other composers but never surpassed. The orchestration in Morricone's music is just as important as the composition. In the score there are some atonal tracks. Apart from this there are also very fine melodic tracks to enjoy.
A very nice piece is BARNABA'S BAMBA. Played on 2 guitars as background and a solo harp played by Anna Palomba for the theme. A very original orchestration. The track IL FUNERALE has something you might recognize. The introduction is the same as on the single IL SILENZIO by Michele Lacerenza on trumpet.
The very peculiar tracks are 9 and 10. The story is told including dialogues, narration, sound effects and songs. These tracks are originally on the very rare album ARC SA 7 from 1965 issued in Italy. Very interesting is also the track L'INCONTRO CON LA FIGLIA, which was originally composed for the John Huston film THE BIBLE (1964) as part of LA CREAZIONE. The track, as all other tracks for The Bible, were recorded and conducted by Franco Ferrara. According to Maestro Morricone: the best conductor ever.
The music has been remastered for this CD and the result is terrific. The music sounds as never before.

Da kann man strategisch schon mal ein bisschen Geld zurücklegen, eine schöne Reihe.

NOVECENTO, aka 1900 (1976)

Bernardo Bertolucci's epic, running time 317 minutes, was originally planned as a six-part TV series. But the political content of the film made the director decide to show the movie on the big screen. In some countries the film was cut in two parts to show them separately.
Starring Robert De Niro, Gerard Depardieu, Burt Lancaster and Donald Sutherland in leading roles. It took Donald Sutherland years to dare watch the film because he played such a terrible fascist in the film.
Ennio Morricone composed, orchestrated and conducted the beautiful music for this huge production. Although it is not mentioned anywhere on the soundtrack, the vocals in the score sound a lot like I CANTORI MODERNI DI ALESSANDRONI. In 1956 before his film music career, Ennio Morricone wrote 5 VARIAZIONI SU UN TEMA DI FRESCOBALDI (5 variations on a theme by Frescobaldi). The fifth theme is the basis for AUTUNNO - 1922 on the NOVECENTO soundtrack.
This soundtrack has everything you can hope for: drama, romance, suspense and action. There are various themes composed for this film. All of them are interesting to listen to. The popular romantic track ROMANZO turned up on almost every compilation album.
Ennio Morricone wrote music for 10 films that year. That is almost one every month. He has always been a very productive composer. NOVECENTO is one of his finest works. The themes play an incredibly magic atmosphere, bringing the audience to focus on the nobility of the land and its peasants. It is amazing how the music of Morricone focuses on the movie scenes here. A short score compared with the length of the movie! So far all editions of this OST have less than an hour of music. Hopefully one day the complete masterpiece score of this long film will be available.

SACCO E VANZETTI (1971)

A true dramatic story that gets the international press is often fit for a movie. SACCO AND VANZETTI is such a story. Bartolomeo Vanzetti (Gian Maria Volonté) and Nicola Sacco (Riccardo Cucciolla) are two Italian immigrants in America, both falsely accused of a robbery. The story of two anarchists who were charged and unfairly tried for murder when it was really for their political convictions. Giuliano Montaldo directed this political drama.
Previous films by Giuliano Montaldo were: AD OGNI COSTO (1967), GLI INTOCCABILI (1968) and GOTT MIT UNS (1969) all have music by Ennio Morricone. It became obvious that Morricone would work again with the director
and he wrote for this film an unforgettable score. As solo instruments he used a bassoon, with that characteristic low and round tone, a little sad, an oboe and organ. The orchestration for this film is not always for large orchestra, but there is a special dramatic ambience. Electronic music that produces the sound effects of the shock of the electric chair here is very original and very suitable to accompany the scenes.
And then there's Joan Baez. Female American singer and lyricist of the two songs in the film. She was 30 years old at the time and already an internationally popular folk singer with a beautiful pure voice. During the end credits in the film, the song HERE'S TO YOU sung by Joan Baez is recorded with the vocal group I CANTORI MODERNI DI ALESSANDRONI. The other song is LA BALLATA DI SACCO E VANZETTI. Ennio Morricone wrote the music and orchestrations for both songs.

Trivia: Giuliano Montaldo and Ennio Morricone worked on 14 films together. Sergio Leone and Ennio Morricone did 6 films together. Alfred Hitchcock and Bernard Herrmann did 9 films together.

Metello (1970)

Mauro Bolognini (1922-2001) directed In 1961 the film La Viaccia. He first worked with Vasco Pratolini as a scriptwriter. Bolognini then discovered the novel Metello by the same writer. Mauro immediately saw a movie in the story. Initially he had Albert Finney for a main role in mind. But Finney was too busy with other films and the plans were shelved. After eight or nine years, the film was finally made. Remarkably it does not show it was a small budget production. Now starring singer Massimo Ranieri and Ottavia Piccolo. For financial reasons the director used a cast unknown and made Metello one of his most famous films. He wanted a sentimental movie and was not ashamed to use feelings in the film. Mauro Bolognini considered Metello and Senilitá as his two most beloved films. Ennio Morricone did the music for Metello and it's not really clear whether it was their 3rd or 4th collaboration. Bolognini's film L'assoluto naturale with Morricone's music is from the same year. The films Arabella (1967) and Un Bellisimo Novembre (1968) were earlier collaborations. Until Bolognini's death in 2001, Morricone wrote the music for 15 movies by Mauro Bolognini. Their final film together was La Villa del Venerdi in 1991. The music for Metello is melodramatic and melodic. The main theme can also be found on many compilation albums. The beauty of the music lies here again in the particular orchestration. Whether it is a saloon piano, mandolin or a brass band, the Maestro knows as always how to be original.

Il Segreto del Sahara, aka Secret of the Sahara (1988)

Secret of the Sahara is a TV Mini-Series in seven parts, starring Ben Kingsley, Michael York, Andie Mac Dowell, David Soul and others. The series were directed by Alberto Negrin. The film tells the story of an archaeologist who finds an old parchment leading to a treasure in the Saharan desert. A film with mystery and adventure. Alberto Negrin directed many TV series. A lot of them have music by Ennio Morricone and many of these soundtracks were released but titles like: Ics (2003); Mi Ricordo Anna Frank (2009); Paolo Borsellino - i 57 Giorni (2012) and L'Isola (2012) are TV series without a soundtrack being released, yet. The master tapes are no doubt at RaiTrade. The music for Secret of the Sahara is a grand scale quality score. The music is for large orchestra and choir. Rich in beautiful melodies. Sometimes subdued, sometimes overwhelming. Morricone used also ethnic instruments, as used in the desert, to come as close as possible to the Sahara sound. Two tracks on the CD, The Mountain and The Golden Door, were conducted by Franco Ferrara. Morricone wrote these tracks for the John Huston film The Bible in 1964. Because sections of this score performed well in Secret of the Sahara, the Maestro reused these same tracks to ultimately bring them to the screen. Morricone reused his music for The Bible only in the films Il Ritorno di Ringo (1965) and Secret of the Sahara. Enjoy the score. It is a masterpiece.

PER UN PUGNO DI DOLLARI (For a Fistful of Dollars) 1964

Italy had already 25 Spaghetti Westerns ready when director Sergio Leone made his first one in 1964 called For a fistful of dollars. Leone considered Henry Fonda but asked James Coburn to play the role of "The man with no name". But Coburn was too expensive. Charles Bronson said no and that it was the worst script he had ever seen. Richard Harrison also turned it down. Leone then offered the part to "Rawhide" (1959) star Eric Fleming who declined and suggested his co-star Clint Eastwood. We all know how that ended. The film For a fistful of dollars was a remake in a different setting of the Japanese samurai film Yojimbo (1961). Akira Kurosawa, director and co-screenwriter of Yojimbo sued the filmmakers for breach of copyright. Ennio Morricone and Sergio Leone knew each other since 3rd grade school days. Morricone gave Leone is availability to write the music for his new film even if the director was not keen on using a yet unknown composer for his film. But Michele Lacerenza's initial trumpet performance on the score made him change his mind. As it is known both the movie and the score had huge success and the Morricone's famous western style started here and then it has been copied all over the world ever since. The relationship between these two artists continued for all the Leone movies that were not only westerns until the director's death happened in Rome the age of 60. Ennio Morricone with this movie had his big launch pad and actually he is still active, after having written about 500 scores for cinema and TV.

C'ERA UNA VOLTA IL WEST (Once Upon a Time in the West) 1969

Ennio Morricone had composed the music score of Once Upon a Time in the West using the original script for the film, so the most part of the music was recorded before the film was shot. Then during the production of the film, the script was changed several times. However Sergio Leone directed the film scenes around the recorded music played on the set with a tape recorder. Edda dell'Orso with this score became famous around the world. Her extraordinary soprano voice with a three octave range has been as instruments in many scores. Franco de Gemini plays the harmonica in his unique way so that was asked his collaboration by Morricone and many other composers for many movies and not only westerns. Typical for Ennio Morricone was the use of atonal music like in track 19: L'attentato that worked very effective in the film. The use of exceptional instruments in the orchestra became the trademark of the composer. This time he used the harmonica, banjo and electric guitar. A soundtrack LP was released by RCA when the film came out. The eventful music for the film made that the soundtrack sold more than 10 million copies worldwide. In Holland, where Ennio Morricone received his first platinum album, the LP was nr. 1 in the LP top 50 for years and sold over 800.000 copies. The soundtrack LP had 13 tracks and the running time was 37:40. In those days it was usual to re-arrange and rerecorded soundtracks for LP releases. This CD has the original film version of the score remastered and almost complete. It is a masterpiece and a classic.

L'AVVENTURIERO

Terence Young became a famous director for bringing the first James Bond movie Dr. NO to the screen in 1962. He directed two more James Bond films: FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE (1963) and THUNDERBALL (1965). Young directed THE ROVER (L'AVVENTURIERO) in 1967. A costume drama after the 1923 novel by Joseph Conrad.

The film was shot in and around Rome, Italy in late 1966. It is a colorful adventure set against the infamous Reign of Terror in the eighteenth century France, starring Anthony Quinn and Rita Hayworth, who danced together 26 years earlier in the film BLOOD AND SAND in 1941. Anthony Quinnplays the eighteenth century pirate and deserter Peirol, running for the French, who was seduced by an innocent girl named Arlette, played by Rosanna Schiaffino. There were high expectations, but the film was not a great success as hoped. However, the best thing about the film is the fantastic score. Ennio Morriconewrote a stunning main theme for the film that became a classic. The score is sometimes powerful and recalls the classical symphonic music at some points, but naturally it is completely original, written especially for the film. The main peculiarity is its diversity. Highlights are the Baroque music, as in track 9, "il Varo", and suspense in "un Attimo di Tenerezza" and "Peirol Forza il Blocco" with the chorus I Cantori Moderni di Alessandroni. The score has it all, well conducted by Bruno Nicolaiand this cd is a jewel in the collection. In 1967 a soundtrack LP was released in Italy on the limited non-commercial RCA SP series. The new cd version is re-mastered and you can hear the soloists Angelo Stefanatoon violin and Dino Asciollaon viola as clear as never before.

LE PISTOLE NON DISCUTONO

In 1964 director Mario Caiano ( as Mike Perkins) directed the Italian western BULLETS DON'T ARGUE (US title). In the sixties many American western actors came to Europe to play in European western movies, like also Rod Cameronwho played the role of sheriff Pat Garrett. On the day of his wedding, the Clayton brothers, Billy and George, robbed the local bank. Garrett caught the bandits in Mexico, but to come home with the two brothers and the money was a challenge. It turned out to be a very acceptable western. The film credits say that the music was composed by Dan Savioand conducted by Leo Nichols: these two names are both pseudonyms for Ennio Morricone. The maestro worked on this score in the same year as he composed that one for PER UN PUGNO DI DOLLARI. The music is completely different from the Sergio Leonefilm and yet it remains a typical western with orchestrations for guitar, trumpet and the whistling by Alessandro Alessandroni.

The American Peter Teviswrote the lyrics for the song Lonesome Billy that he also performed as a singer. The harmonica in the score, as in track 5, is by Franco de Gemini. In track Le Pistole Non Discutono, you can almost hear the bandits ride on their horses, infact the rhythm resembles the sound of riding horses. Unfortunately the film and the CD give no information on who is the female singer, in track 10, Cantina Messicana. She has a nice voice. In this score, although being an early western by Ennio Morricone (his first western for the western genre is DUELLO NEL TEXAS from 1963), the maestro did know already how to create tension in the film with his music and track 12, Gli Indiani #3, is a classic example. The score has a few great themes that are reflected in various orchestrations.

L'ISTRUTTORIA E' CHIUSA: DIMENTICHI

THE CASE IS CLOSED: FORGET IT is a 1971 film directed by Damiano Damiani, with Franco Nero starring as an architect named Vanzi who was accused of murder and sentenced to jail. Vanzi knows how to make opportunistic use of abuses in prison and by coming to the status of his class of parole for good behavior. The film is conventional, but made proficient in the harsh prison tradition. Refined scenario in which the main character, first as a victim claiming sympathy and his own identity and then showing his true hypocrite guise in harsh conditions, gives the main impact to this thriller. The music by Ennio Morricone is most original and works perfectly in the film. But don't expect a classic melody in this score. It was not a film for romance or beauty. At times the music is difficult to listen to. Electronic sounds and bits and short pieces of marches and classical music are heard in a way like someone is going through all channels on a radio. As mentioned in the opening credits of the film the electronic sounds in this score were created with the collaboration of Walter Branchi. Branchi was like Ennio Morricone a member of the "Gruppo di improvvisazione Nuova Consonanza" at the time. Originally there were no plans to produce this score as a soundtrack album. But the fame of Morricone made that his fans worldwide wanted this scores to be released. In 1998 the first soundtrack of this film was released on cd. In 2004 an extended LP and CD were released and in 2014 a new re-issue on LP with different artwork. Now you have the remastered version with an improved sound quality. If you listen carefully, the music of this score is a real and excellent composition and not improvisation at all. An interesting score.

IL DIAVOLO NEL CERVELLO

DEVIL IN THE BRAIN is an Italian Giallo (yellow) movie directed by Sergio Sollima in 1972. Little Ricky, a child suspected of killing his father is imprisoned in a mental hospital with nuns. Doctor Emilio Bontempi (played by Tino Buazzelli) finds the boy mentally healthy and begins to suspect another explanation. Sandra, the mother (played by Stefania Sandrelli), has lost her memory from the shock, while countess Claudia Osio De Blanc (played by Micheline Presle) is trying to cover up the truth. Suspense till the end. The film did have a very good success of audience in Italy, but less internationally. Sollima and Ennio Morricone had already worked together in three previous films: LA THE BIG GUNDOWN (1966), FACE TO FACE (1967) and VIOLENT CITY (1970). The thriller has a nice quiet score with a beautiful opening theme, supported with the voice of Edda Dell'Orso. Track 3, Prima della rivelazione, is heard in the film when Little Ricky is in a mental hospital and pieces of Für Elise by Ludwig van Beethoven are used in other parts of the score. Für Elise returns in track 8, Vita sospesa. He used again Beethoven's Für Elise three years later in the western THE GENIUS starring Terence Hill. In DEVIL IN THE BRAIN Morricone made a perfect balance between music full of suspense and classical pieces. He wrote few themes, but fantastic, that work perfectly in the film. Bruno Nicolai conducted this score, as in many other occasions. In 1972 the Maestro was very productive and composed the music for 22 films released in that same year, including both those for the big screen and those for TV.

IL FIORE DELLE MILLE E UNA NOTTE

Director Pier Paolo Pasolini finished his trilogy, after THE CANTERBURY TALES (1971) and THE DECAMERON (1972), here ARABIAN NIGHTS in 1974. The ancient erotic and mysterious tales of the Middle East inspired this film. Franco Merli plays the main character, a boy named Nur Ed Din who falls in love with a girl slave (played by Ines Pellegrini) called Zumurrud who really selected him as her master. After having been separated, the two meet again only at the end of the movie. The story is unreal, the movie is realized like a dream full of fantasy and wins the special Gran Prix of the jury at the Cannes film festival in 1974. Pasolini has his personal style of making movies. The costumes designed by Danilo Donati are fantastic. The actors are realistic .The music by Ennio Morricone is not what you might expect from a romantic Arabian film, there are no love themes, not much of melodic themes at all. But instead it is one of the most original scores for church organ, harp and flute, besides of course the presence of orchestral music. The compositions for solo organ are quite innovative and the Maestro has proved once again his originality, with the power he knows how to transmit through his music. By the way there is a lot more organ music than in the film. Ennio Morricone has collaborated with Pier Paolo Pasolini in seven movies, including his last controversial film SALO', OR THE 120 DAYS OF SODOM in 1975. A few weeks before this movie release, the director was murdered.

LA CUGINA

Director Aldo Lado has directed in 1974 the comedy/drama THE COUSIN (LA CUGINA) after a novel by Ercole Patti. Enzo (played by Massimo Ranieri) and Agata (played by the Canadian actress Dayle Haddon) are two cousins who from childhood and later in adolescence abandon themselves in a series of erotic plays so that they will eventually become lovers. But Agata, for her convenience, marries the rich baron Nini Scuderi (played by Christian De Sica). Director Aldo Lado asked Ennio Morricone to write the music also for the film, after all his four previous films: LA CORTA NOTTE DELLE BAMBOLE DI VETRO (1971), CHI L'HA VISTA MORIRE? (1972), LA COSA BUFFA (1972) E SEPOLTA VIVA (1973). Their collaboration will continue for other four movies. Ennio Morricone for this erotic movie has composed very fascinating sensual themes, providing both the orchestrations and the conducting. Oscar Valdambrini with his flugelhorn and Edda Dell'Orso with her sexy voice, have offered the great solo performances. The chorus of I Cantori Moderni di Alessandroni has contributed with the usual background, typical of the music of Morricone from that period. The score has some theme that are presented in various romantic orchestrations. In the film there is also a song played by an uncredited Nilla Pizzi as well a dance music. Enjoy!

Gli Intoccabili / La Donna Invisibile (300 copies) - Ennio Morricone - soundtrack (2CD)

GLI INTOCCABILI

Giuliano Montaldo directed the thriller GLI INTOCCABILI aka Machine Gun McCain in 1969. A mafia agent in San Francisco is trying in vain to get shares in a casino in Las Vegas and rents the gangster Hank McCain (John Cassavetes), just released from 12 years in prison, to rob it. The Mafia leader Charlie Adamo (Falk) uses Hank's young brother, Jack, to gain control of Las Vegas while Hank tries to stop the looting in many ways. The complicated family intrigues make this an entertaining crime drama that captivates, thanks to the strong cast and a fresh look of Italian director Montaldo. The sensational music by Ennio Morricone starts with the Ballad of Hank McCain. A strong theme that made it to many compilation albums and dominates the score. The song was written by Audrey Nohra and sung by Jackie Lynton. Various vocal and instrumental versions are heard on the cd. The score has pleasant lounge music that underscores the casinos in Las Vegas and Night Clubs. The love theme Irene was composed for the girlfriend of Hank McCain, Irene was played by Britt Ekland. The score has also some waltzes and various action music in the typical style of Morricone and all well conducted by Bruno Nicolai. The nice theme Rosemary was composed for the guest star Gena Rowlands who played a little role as Rosemary Scott, the tough old flame of Hank. Morricone did experiment with electronic music in those days and it worked great in the score with the film. The soundtrack is various, the orchestrations are absolutely fabulous and illustrates that Morricone is capable of writing any type of music. Machine Gun McCain was after AD OGNI COSTO (1967) Morricone's second film score for Giuliano Montaldo as ten more would follow.

LA DONNA INVISIBILE

This psychological drama was made in 1969 by director Paolo Spinola. It is an Italian Art House film. Here is the story in short. Laura (Giovanna Ralli) finds that her husband Andrea (Silvano Tranquilli) is bored with her. She is too inhibited to provoke him and asks advice from her girlfriends. One suggests an open marriage with cheating to keep the tension going. Another, Delfina (Carla Gravina) is willing to be a candidate for a ménage à trois. Her careful going along with these ideas lead to new frustrations and a dramatic plot. The story was based on a book by Alberto Moravia. The film was unfortunately not a success. The nude scenes and the good acting by Giovanna Ralli and Carla Gravina were not enough to make the film a hit. The best part of the film is the beautiful music by Ennio Morricone. The music has very nice themes and is recognisable as Ennio Morricone from the first notes on. Edda Dell'Orso is back as the soloist for the female voice and doing a great performance as always. She sounds erotic in the track Eros Profondo. The track Ritratto d'Autore is an interesting staccato piano theme with a very clever rhythm that goes over in a bossa nova theme and back. The bossa nova comes back in a few more tracks. The score is very sixties with some swing beat themes. Ennio Morricone created a romantic atmosphere in the movie in his own unique way. In all it is a nice cd with all tracks melodious and now remastered to let you enjoy the music as never before.

IL PENTITO (THE PENITENT) 1985

An ambitious mafia film by director Pasquale Squitieri that was made in 1985 about the murder of Ambrosoli and mafia corruption in the USA, where the Sindona scandal took down the Franklin Bank. It is a fictional story based on real events and is well directed by Squitieri with a tight scenario that does keep pace in it. It helps to see the film if you are familiar with the scandal that shook the financial centre of Milan and New York. Starring Max von Sydow as Spinola, Franco Nero as Judge Falco and Tony Musante as Vanni Ragusa (the repentant / Il pentito). Ennio Morricone wrote a great number of film scores for the Sicilian problems with the mafia. A few famous film titles are GENTE DI RISPETTO, DIMENTICARE PALERMO and for television GIOVANNI FALCONE and LA PIOVRA. Ennio Morricone did two more film scores for Pasquale Squitieri before IL PENTITO, both mafia films. IL PREFETTO DI FERRO (1977) and CORLEONE (1978). The score for IL PENTITO is full of tension and action, but the cd starts with a lovely romantic theme for strings orchestrated in a typical Morricone style. And there are more nice themes as there is in track 4, Il pentito - (Colloqui discreti) a theme for guitar and flute and track 6 Addio al Padre (for guitar and oboe). The track Arrivo a New York is a mambo for big band orchestration. The track Renata that comes in various versions on the cd is orchestrated in the style of LA PIOVRA but all compositions are new for IL PENTITO. Ennio Morricone is original as usual as he always comes up with new music and create new fascinating orchestrations. For this fascinating score he is also the conductor of the orchestra.

RAPPRESAGLIA (REPRISAL) 1973

The movie reconstructs through the book by Robert Katz Morte a Roma (Death in Rome) the events regarding the attack in via Rasella in Rome in 1944, where 32 German soldiers were killed by some partisans. In retaliation, the German command decided that they had to be executed 10 Italians for every killed German. Richard Burton plays Lieutenant Colonel Herbert Kappler commissioned to command the firing squad. Marcello Mastroianni plays the convincing role of father Pietro Antonelli, a priest after having vainly begged Kappler save the prisoners, at the end he follows the condemned ones within the Fosse Ardeatine, where he is killed along with everyone else, in a massacre that will remain in history. This war drama was directed by George Pan Cosmatos in 1973 and has had a limited release in 1975. The music of Ennio Morricone follows the drama of the film, the maestro knows where to put the music as he also knows where gaps. There are only a few melodious themes in the score, most of the score creates a feeling of unease. A military march is composed in a staccato way and sounds frightening. Eerie strings, cellos, a drum, timpani and a few notes on a piano do most of the job. Bruno Nicolai conducts the orchestra in a masterly way. The music of Ennio Morricone is recognizable from the first notes, even when it is difficult. Listening to the CD will return to the images of the film.

COSA AVETE FATTO A SOLANGE?(1972) Is a famous classic Giallo movie with the direction of Massimo Dallamano. It has various English titles like WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO SOLANGE? And TERROR IN THE WOODS or THE SECRET OF THE GREEN PINS. The teacher Henry (played by Fabio Testi) is having an affair with his student Elizabeth (Cristina Galbó), and he takes her out on a boat trip. They witness a knife killing on the shore. More bloody murders of girls are taking place by an elusive 'Catholic priest' in a residents college. The police and teachers cannot locate the killer and Henry becomes the main suspect. At the start the movie is a bit slow, but turns out to be one of the best Italian Giallo films, with the style so close to those of Dario Argento . Ennio Morricone wrote a perfect score for this drama with the most romantic music. The eerie avant-garde music makes the film even more intense. The score starts with a sensitive main theme vocally supported by Edda dell'Orso theme that will be added to various Morricone compilation albums. The track Cadenze is for solo organ underlines the priest at work. The so called difficult music in the score is not as you might suspect atonal music. There is a lot of melodies in the tracks, but without the film sometimes it is hard to swallow. Ennio Morricone in those days was a member of the Gruppo Di Improvvisazione NuovaConsonanza, a group of composers specialized on improvisations of abstract music. This music style returns on some tracks on the score. However, the music in general is not too hard to listen to. The track Fragile Organetto is a nice Luna Park theme for organ and Anche un quartetto per lei is an interesting piece for bassoon and small orchestra. Una tromba e la sua notte is a track with a jazzy like rhythm and has various psychedelic tunes on various instruments. So a score with great variety in music.

The film SPASMO is a Giallo movie directed by Umberto Lenzi in 1974. Christian (Robert Hoffman) and his girlfriend discover a woman's body on the beach that after an investigation appears to be again alive. The next day Christian meets her again at a party on a yacht and he is falling in love with this unknown woman (Suzy Kendall). After the party the two went to a motel and just when they want to go to bed, an armed intruder comes in to hit Christian, but he reacts, grabs the gun from the intruder and he accidentally shoots him. After an hour the corpse seems to have disappeared and this is the beginning of a series of bizarre events. The effects in the film are gross, the complications vague and the plot is highly unlikely. It is a weird film, yet an interesting Giallo movie. Ennio Morricone has written the score for another Lenzi movie MILANO ODIA: LA POLIZIA NON PUO' SPARARE. For SPASMO the Maestro has composed and orchestrated a very original score, full of tension on dissonant music of contemporary art. He has used electronics andhigh-pitched strings to give the film an uneasy feeling and it works great. In the film the tracks Samba do Desprezo from AD OGNI COSTO (1967) and La diva from COME IMPARAI AD AMARE LE DONNE (1966) have also been used. Bruno Nicolai has conducted the orchestra in the recording studio. The cd has a good balance between the psychedelic music and the easy listening music. A single was released in 1974 with the track Bambole.

Il Segreto / Il Deserto Dei Tartari (300 copies) - Ennio Morricone - soundtrack (2CD)

The original title for this French film is LE SECRET (1974). A mysterious thriller directed by Robert Enrico who did a good adaption of LE COMPAGNON INDÉSIRABLE, a horror novel with a very improbable plot by Francis Ryck. During his dark period, between TANTE ZITA (1968) and LE VIEUX FUSIL (1976), Robert Enrico made his worst films. He is however trying here to save himself, assisted by Philippe Noiret, but certainly not by the infuriating Marlène Jobert. Typical movie of the 70s, but with intelligently this movie starts with David Daguerre (Jean Louis Trintignant) who is tied on a bed in a prison cell and tortured by water drops falling on his head. The opening music starts with the sound of these water drops. Ennio Morricone, original as usual, used this as the foundation for the music. Then naturally the theme develops returning in various solutions. The second track, "Dal Mare", is another masterpiece for piano and orchestra with the extraordinary voice of Edda Dell´Orso. These two tracks were originally issued on vinyl single in France (1974) and in Italy (1975). This was all the music released commercially until 1982, when the film ESPION LÈVE-TOI (Yves Boisset) came out and a soundtrack was released on LP with the track "Ombre Sospese". This interesting dark and mysterious theme for cello, bass and piano is re-used music from track 4, "Nebulosa Prima", from LE SECRET. The score is sometimes repetitive but never boring thanks to the different orchestrations by Ennio Morricone. In the year 2000 a complete soundtrack was finally released on cd going sold out within a few weeks. Now this is a remastered reissue with only 300 copies, a must have not only for Morricone fans. Sijbold Tonkens

The great Italian film director Valerio Zurlini has realized one of his most impressive films in 1976: IL DESERTO DEI TARTARI. A historical war drama based on the homonymous novel by Dino Buzzati. The young lieutenant Drogo (Jacques Perrin) is placed in a desert fortress where soldiers and officers are awaiting a possible attack of the Tartars. Years pass without the taking place of the feared or hoped attack, so the wait is their only raison for being there. Locations in Iran give an unreal atmosphere. In this two and a half hours film, international actors like Jean Louis Trintignant, Philippe Noiret, Vittorio Gassman, Max von Sydow and Giuliano Gemma entertain practically with the nothing happening. Valerio Zurlini directed the acting scenes while Christian de Chalonge has directed the fieldworks. Not much happens in the film,as already told there's only waiting, and that's really this making the movie interesting. During the opening credits, the films begins with lieutenant Drogo saying farewells to his mother and beloved ones and is leaving on his horse to his first assignment in the desert. Ennio Morricone wrote in his own style a sad solo piano theme, which is reminiscent of Chopin that makes it even sadder in the farewell scene. On the cd it is track 6, "La Casa e La Giovinezza" (home and youth). Alberto Pomeranz performs the piano piece. The cd starts with a track for organ performed by Giorgio Carnini with orchestra, creating the musical atmosphere of the movie. Again Morricone came up composing some interesting and original themes for this film, using the military trumpet as foundation. The score gives a fantastic musical feeling that underlines the desert and the boredom of the soldiers. Some tracks are harsh, however most of them are pleasing. There is even a gypsy dance in "La Cena degli Ufficiali", tracks 12,17,19. Maestro Morricone gave us here another score with a wide variety of music. Like any soundtrack also this also gives us the music as a significant souvenir of the film, for those who have seen it.

Director Aldo Lado asked Ennio Morricone to write the music also for the film, after all his four previous films: LA CORTA NOTTE DELLE BAMBOLE DI VETRO (1971), CHI L'HA VISTA MORIRE?????
